Background checks for non-profits

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, joined by United Way of Central New York staff and Central New York non-profit agencies, announced Friday his plan to introduce legislation allowing non-profit organizations that serve children to have access to federal background checks for employees and volunteers. The goal, he said, is to help non-profits safeguard children from sexual predators. Schumer noted that while agencies do the best they can, background checks must currently be applied for through the state, take approximately 45 days and cost $99. If his proposal is adopted into law, it will make the process faster and cheaper. "These groups are vigilant -- every one of them -- in screening their employees," Schumer said. "But they need more tools."
