Are
you willing to Walk the Talk?
Last
week, Steve McCormick, senior manager of the
Anheuser-Busch brewery in Baldwinsville, put
out a unique challenge to fellow business executives:
to ‘Walk the Talk’ for their community.
“As
company leaders, we talk about the importance
of giving back to our community. We speak of
our personal commitment when we ask our employees
to give. I want our employees to see that I
mean it.”
On
November 21, Mr. McCormick, the 2006 United
Way Campaign Chair, will set out from Anheuser-Busch’s
Baldwinsville brewery for a nearly 13-mile
run to United Way’s offices in Syracuse.
He’ll carry an important symbolic cargo:
the total of the gifts given to this year’s
United Way campaign by Anheuser-Busch employees.
As
2006 United Way Campaign Chair, Mr. McCormick
invites fellow executives to join him in a
public demonstration of commitment from the
business community, “It’s about
leaders showing that we mean what we say—that
we are willing to walk the talk.” |
 |
- The
event will be held on Tuesday, November
21 (rain or shine). We ask for arrivals
to take place between 3 and 3:20 p.m. An
announcement to the media of our mid-campaign
total is scheduled for 3:30.
- The
chief executive at your company will carry
your current campaign total from your
place of business to United Way at 518 James
Street. We welcome and encourage teams to
come from each company, but your executive
should
participate in at least the last leg of the
journey to present your campaign total.
Feel free to
walk, run, bike or use a relay team (or be
creative about how you’ll get here!).
- Please
contact Rosey
Oaks-Lee at United
Way at 315-428-2210 as soon as possible
to RSVP and coordinate your participation.
- Employee Campaign Coordinators are
encourage to check with their CEOs to confirm
that they received an invitation to participate
in Walk the Talk. Didn’t get one? Click
here.
Details will be updated daily on our website, www.unitedway-cny.org.

| Meet
Steve McCormick, 2006 United Way of Central New
York Campaign Chair. Beer making and long-distance
running is an unusual combination of specialties,
but Steve McCormick is
experienced at both.
Mr. McCormick is an avid
triathlete. This year, he has completed two Iron
Man events, running,
biking and swimming 140.6 miles in each, as well
as several 26-mile marathons. He splits his training
time between road and pool, and runs an average
of nearly 50 miles each week. Just two days before
Walk the Talk, he plans to run in the Philadelphia
Marathon. Asked if that will be a problem, McCormick
responds, “Not at all—I’ll be
a little tired on Monday, but by Tuesday I’ll
be ready to go!”
Equally challenging is overseeing
daily production of 400,000 cases of beer. Mr.
McCormick began his
career with Anheuser-Busch in 1978 as a brewing
supervisor in Milwaukee. Today, he is plant manager
of the company’s Baldwinsville brewery.
Mr. McCormick serves on
the board of directors at a number of community
organizations, and is
the 2006 Chair of United Way’s Community
Campaign. He lives in Manlius with his wife, Linda,
and daughter, Emily.
