We’ve had dozens of phone calls from companies planning to participate—Walk the Talk is growing bigger by the day! We’ve also heard some great questions. If your company is thinking of participating, perhaps these FAQ’s and tips can help.

Who can participate?
The senior executive from any company that runs a United Way campaign. (And new companies are MOST welcome—there’s still plenty of time to run a successful campaign this year.) We welcome and encourage groups or relay teams to join in, but the chief executive should participate in at least the last leg of the journey to present your campaign total.

What if our CEO is out of town?
Because this is about the personal commitment of company leaders, we hope that in nearly all cases the most senior executive will participate. But when this person is just not available, a “second-in-command” member of the executive team can represent your company.

Does our campaign need to be completed?
No! At this event we will report the mid-campaign total—knowing that many companies are still running campaigns and some have yet to get started. If your campaign is still running, bring your current partial total and your goal. If you haven’t yet kicked off, bring a symbolic “first dollar” and your goal. Showing your commitment is the most important thing.

What should I bring?
The basics: a cell phone and your campaign total. But this is also a great opportunity to showcase your company. For the trip, show your corporate identity with clothing, flags, signs, etc. Decorate your chase car if you’re coming from a distance.

And if you can, bring in your campaign total in some creative way. We offer a few ideas, beginning with an oversized check made out to United Way with your company logo and other decorations if desired. If you work in a hospital, how about an oversize X-ray of your gift amount! Work in the shipping business? Bring a huge box that holds your gift. Run a bakery? Bring a giant cookie decorated with the amount of your gift. Get creative and don’t be afraid to only carry your bulky prop for the last leg of the journey. (We can hold it in the wings waiting for you if you wish.)

Where exactly will I go?
You can enter the 500 block of James Street from the east or west.

What time should I arrive?
We ask participants to arrive between 3:00 and 3:20. If you wish to have a team at the finish line to cheer you in, please have them arrive by 3:00.

At 3:30, we will welcome Steve McCormick as he completes his 12-mile run as the “last one in.” Immediately after he arrives, the mid-campaign total will be announced to the media and an historic, 2006 “class picture” of participating executives will be taken.

How do I make sure this runs smoothly?
Contact Rosey Oaks-Lee at United Way ASAP, 315-428-2210. Rosey will register you for the event, help you think through the necessary details, coordinate your participation and answer any questions you may have.

Details will be updated daily on our website, www.unitedway-cny.org. Check back often for the most up-to-date instructions.

Meet Allen Naples, 2006 United Way Campaign Vice Chair.

Allen J. Naples is M&T Bank’s Senior Vice President and Regional President in Syracuse. Although he’s proud to step up and “Walk the Talk” in support of his community, he admits that he’s glad he doesn’t have to run miles to get to United Way—M&T Bank’s headquarters are also located in downtown Syracuse.

“I’m not sure I can do 12 miles, but I’m pretty sure I can do 12 blocks!” Mr. Naples joked after being challenged by United Way Campaign Chair and triathlete Steve McCormick at a press conference last week. But Mr. Naples is enthusiastic about this event and is helping United Way decorate the finish line with a giant balloon arch, courtesy of M&T bank.

Mr. Naples has been with M&T Bank since 2005, and has worked in banking in Upstate New York for more than 30 years. He is very active in the community, serving in a variety of organizations.

“M&T Bank is deeply vested in the neighborhoods where we do business,” he said. “The United Way initiatives and programs coincide with our missions and our values. I am proud to walk my talk and show my personal commitment to this community.”

Mr. Naples resides in Fayetteville with his wife, Betsy. The Naples have two grown daughters.
