Welcome to the first edition of the 2007 Speakers
Bureau e-newsletter, published weekly during the campaign season.
Thank you
We’re grateful to everyone who attended
training in August, and offer special thanks to veteran speakers
Tom Slater of the Food Bank of Central New York, Ginny Donohue
from On Point for College, and Nancy Kronen from The Salvation
Army who shared sample presentations and their considerable know-how
at the workshops. Thank you!
Those who did not attend training can expect to
receive a packet in the mail shortly. This training packet
includes a guide to speaker scheduling, a handbook for crafting
an effective campaign presentation,
and helpful hints. This information is also available in the Speakers
Bureau section of our website.
Tip of the week
It’s easy to get caught up in your story
and lose track of time when doing a presentation. But you may
find yourself cut short if you don’t stick to the program,
and there’s
nothing worse than not being able to make your main point! Be
aware that most companies set aside a very short time for their
campaign meetings and expect us to respect these limits. So when
preparing your speech, make sure to time your rehearsal. Then
work on paring down your presentation as needed until it fits
the time you’ll have, even though it may mean cutting out
some wonderful details and useful information. [HINT: Some speakers
leave copies of a more detailed version of their stories when
they know they’ll have very little time to present.]
