SPEAKERS BUREAU E-NEWSLETTER: OCTOBER 2, 2007

Thanks for your patience!
Requests for speakers are keeping Kelly very busy as we head into the busiest weeks of campaign season. We always do our best to schedule well in advance; but this week left us dealing with a few last-minute schedule changes and cancellations.  We apologize if you were inconvenienced, and we thank you for your flexibility.

Tip of the week—bring it back to the big picture
Teaching donors about your work and your agency is an important part of your speech, but it’s equally important to explain the value of giving to the whole community through United Way. Show donors that your program is valuable—as are the many other services that they will support with a gift to United Way. Here are some ideas for how to include this in your presentation:

  1. Tell the story of how your program’s clients are also helped by other United Way funded programs.
  2. If your agency uses United Way dollars as the local match for government grants, explain how this increases the value of a gift.
  3. Talk about ways your agency collaborates with other United Way agencies to do more or operate more efficiently.
  4. Tell the audience about United Way’s allocations process—how rigorous it is and how competitive. People like to know that we’re working together to make sure their money is being spent wisely.

Thank you
