SPEAKERS BUREAU E-NEWSLETTER: OCTOBER 9, 2007

Thanks for your patience!
Requests for speakers are keeping Kelly very busy as we head into the busiest weeks of campaign season. We always do our best to schedule well in advance; but this week left us dealing with a few last-minute schedule changes and cancellations.  We apologize if you were inconvenienced, and we thank you for your flexibility.

Tip of the week—bring it back to the big picture
Teaching donors about your work and your agency is an important part of your speech, but it’s equally important to explain the value of giving to the whole community through United Way. Show donors that your program is valuable—as are the many other services that they will support with a gift to United Way. Here are some ideas for how to include this in your presentation:

  1. Tell the story of how your program’s clients are also helped by other United Way funded programs.
  2. If your agency uses United Way dollars as the local match for government grants, explain how this increases the value of a gift.
  3. Talk about ways your agency collaborates with other United Way agencies to do more or operate more efficiently.
  4. Tell the audience about United Way’s allocations process—how rigorous it is and how competitive. People like to know that we’re working together to make sure their money is being spent wisely.

Hero of the week—the Initiative award
After reading last week’s e-newsletter, Rick Fowler from InterFaith Works left us a message on behalf of his agency, stating, “We are ready, willing, and very able.” He then left his cell number, and offered to speak on days, nights and weekends—and let’s just say he had a few calls from Speakers Bureau last week! Rick ended up doing four presentations last week, including one last-minute request. Thanks so much Rick!

Thank you

We invite everyone in Speakers Bureau, and all the staff from our funded agencies, to join us for the second-annual Walk the Talk event. We want to show the participating CEOs how much we all appreciate their personal commitment to helping the community. Plan to join us for lunch (and fresh, hot donuts!) starting at 11:45 a.m. on Halloween, Wednesday, October 31, in front of United Way's offices at 518 James Street.

Please encourage your executive director to walk his or her talk for the community and recruit an enthusiastic team to cheer your boss over the finish line. This event is a blast—don’t miss it! E-rsvp here for Walk the Talk.
