United Way of Central New York has two Leadership Giving Programs that recognize generous individuals and couples who make an annual gift of $1,000 or more to the community through United Way. The societies are: the Alexis de Tocqueville Society for annual gifts of $10,000 or more, and the Hamilton White Society for annual gifts of $1,000 - $9,999. Over 1,200 individuals and couples are members of our Leadership Societies.

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is United Way of America’s most prestigious leadership giving program. It was founded nationally in 1984 and started locally in 1993. It exists to foster, promote and recognize the vital importance of voluntary community service and personal giving at an exceptional level. Membership includes individuals who contribute $10,000 or more annually. Members are recognized at both the local and national level and listed in Alexis de Tocqueville Society leadership directories with other prominent leaders from Central New York and across the nation.

The society’s namesake, a nineteenth-century French historian, wrote about his admiration of the American spirit of voluntary association and voluntary effort for the common good. That spirit can be seen today in the generosity of leadership contributors.

The Hamilton White Society is named after Hamilton White, Esq., one of Syracuse’s most esteemed businessmen and philanthropists of the 1800’s. The Society was started in 1987 and consists of four giving levels: the Malcolm Block, the Bastable Block, the Larned Block and the Wieting Block. These giving blocks are named after local nineteenth century civic leaders who contributed to the economic and cultural development of Syracuse and Onondaga County.

This is a new recognition category for donors who give between $500 and $999 to the annual United Way campaign.

This category is designed to thank and recognize donors who are not yet in the Hamilton White Society level of giving, but desire to make a significant contribution to United Way. Members of the 500 Club may be likely to step up to the Hamilton White level in the near future.

Legacy/Planned giving is a donor service that enables you to give gifts of assets during your lifetime or through a will or testamentary instrument. In other words, it can be given now or later. The process of giving requires planning on the part of donors, their advisors, and United Way. Planned gifts provide enhanced tax benefits and some return an income to the donor.
