Why Volunteer?

Volunteers know they help others, but most volunteers report that they get benefits too! Volunteering gives you the opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. Who knows, it might even lead to a career change!

Share your expertise in helping to enrich a parent’s relationship with their child. Support families and children in foster care ages 0-3 in learning how to have fun together. Volunteers will model, interact and play appropriately. Parents and volunteers may read to a child or group, do musical activities or just plain cuddle! The program “Baby and Me” through DSS starts January 23, 2006 and will meet Mondays and Thursdays for 12 weeks at the Dewitt Community Library. Training will be provided prior to the start of this program.
Mentor at-risk youth ages 13-16 at the Center for Community Alternatives. A volunteer will meet with youth a minimum of once a week, attend nine hours of training, follow-up trainings once per month and be at least 21. Background checks are required and a one-year commitment. Meetings are at various community locations.
Mentor 6- to 12-year-olds with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. A volunteer will make a commitment for at least one year and spend between 8 to 10 hours per month with a child. Volunteers will have to a attend a training, complete an application and interview with the Mentor Manager. The minimum age to volunteer is 18. Volunteers are also needed to serve on the advisory Council.
