Associate Position, Volunteer Resources

Overall Responsibility of this Position: The goal of this position is to position United Way's Volunteer Center as the premiere resource for voluntary needs in Central New York. 

This position serves as the point of contact for development and coordination of volunteer activities.  This individual will respond to and recruit groups to give their time by placing them in a premium volunteer opportunity.  Develop and support premium volunteer opportunities in the non-profit and public sector.  Generate excitement, inspiration and recognition for volunteerism.  This position will:

  • Promote 1-800-Volunteer.org as the premiere volunteer management tool.
  • Recruit and place volunteers, while maintaining a network of volunteers and opportunities.
  • Maintain volunteer initiatives at United Way and within United Way's network.
  • Represent United Way with local, statewide and national peer organizations

Experience/Background/Knowledge:  Must have experience in working with volunteers and community organizations.  Should be knowledgeable in the principles and practices of volunteer program management, and the principles of volunteer leadership and management.  

Skills: 

  • Critical thinking and planning for finding creative approaches.
  • Utilize planning, evaluation, and research skills.  Detail oriented. 
  • Understand and work with fiscal and programmatic information. 
  • Strategic planning for short and long-term efforts.
  • Successful problem solving.
  • Motivation and team building with consideration for cultural sensitivities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for constant telephone and in-person communication
  • Strong oral and written English language skills for effective communication using excellent spelling, grammar and writing skills.  Must be able to carefully proof own work.
  • MS Windows Word, Excel, and Access.   Will analyze and manage a variety of data.  Must have the ability to learn new and/or customized software. 
  • Must be able to set priorities and meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment. 
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team and also able to work independently.
  • Ability to be a self-starter with a minimum of supervision. 

Physical Requirements Necessary on a Regular Basis:

  • Speech and hearing sufficient for constant in-person and telephone communication.
  • Vision sufficient for constant use of a computer monitor, reading various documents and maintenance of a New York State Drivers’ License.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient for frequent use of a computer keyboard and other office equipment and for performing routine office functions, which may include the ability to stuff large quantities of envelopes or collate documents.
  • Range of motion sufficient for unassisted movement within the UWCNY office and at various public and private locations outside the UWCNY offices.
  • The ability to drive a personal vehicle to various public and private locations. This requires maintenance of a New York State Drivers’ License, free from major infractions, acceptable to our Insurance Carrier.
  • Ability to work at a desk for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift and carry materials to a work location or the ability to place such materials on a handcart or other mode of assistance.
